Study on the Scattering of Deicing Salt and the Corrosion of Steel Bridges by Exposure Field Test
Eiji Iwasaki
As corrosion damage factor of steel structures, it is considered a variety of environmental conditions. In particular, in the cold, snowy regions, there are corrosion damage caused by spreading deicing salt are numerous. The cases of the deicing salt adhesion to steel girder are water leak which include deicing salt, and scattering of deicing salt by wind and traffic passage. Is often damage report in steel bridge by the former, but the latter also has been reported. In the deicing salt sprayed area, the corrosion environment is severe if the weathering steel bridge has a parallel bridge with a height difference.
However, research on the adhesion of scattered deicing salt is less. Therefore, it isn't evident that the corrosion of steel bridges caused by scattered deicing salt. In this paper, we researched plural bridges in the Joshinetsu Expressway and Nagano Expressway. Specifically, we measured amount of the scattered deicing salt and the corrosion of test piece using the weathering steel at girder.
The results of this research were the following.
・Steel girder is corroded by the scattering of deicing salt.
・Progress of corrosion in the bottom part of web and the lower surface of lower flange is slow.
・In contrast, progress of corrosion in the upper surface of lower flange is fast.
・In particular, corrosion environment of the between of parallel bridge is severe, because there are many amount of the scattering of deicing salt.
・There is a positive correlation between the relationship of the amount of spreading deicing salt and the airborne salt to girder.
