The Study of Indirect Estimation of Relaxation Property by Elastic Recovery Test

Osamu Takahashi Takeshi Nakamura

In this study aimed to estimate relaxation properties of asphalt mixture by using property evaluation test of asphalt binder, indirectly. It is investigated correlation between Elastic recovery ratio(R %), relaxation time of asphalt binder, and FD value.
FD value is calculated from the Force Ductility Test results which provided our laboratory, it have high correlation with fatigue resistance of asphalt mixture. Elastic recovery ratio calculated from the Elastic recovery test which regulated by ASTM. Both test executed with ductility testing device which equipped load cell. Therefore, it can be observed load reducing in Elastic Recovery Test, and calculate relaxation time.
To consider the effect of addition of polymer, compare straight asphalt, modified asphalt, and mixed asphalt as change mixing ratio to 30%, 50%, and 70%.
In the result, Elastic recovery ratio has high correlation with relaxation time of asphalt binder, and can be estimate relaxation property of asphalt mixture. High polymer contained asphalt binder have high elastic recovery ratio and fatigue resistance. However, it need more long relaxation time than low polymer contained asphalt binder, it is inferred that high recovering force to inhibit to relaxation.
