Thesis Title : Fundamental Study on Improving The Performance of Asphalt Binder Modified by Black Carbon
Supervisor : Osamu TAKAHASHI
Overview: English sentence
Black carbon (BC) is a chemical product obtained by incompletely combusting raw oils.
BC is often used to reinforce materials which have rubber like automobile tires, or
airplane tires. In process of fabricating BC in industry factories, the rest of BC usually
becomes garbage.
The past research pointed out that asphalt mixtures modified with BC show a good
resistance with effects of weather conditions. Moreover, plastic flow resistance of BC
asphalt mixtures is also improved. However, as far as the authors are concerned, BC
content in asphalt binder (AB) is not investigated clearly to have a good asphalt mixture.
The main objective of the study is to investigate effect of BC on resistance performance
of AB. This research used a straight asphalt of Pen 60/80, which were produced in Japan.
Three types of BCs, namely A, B. and C which distinguish physical properties were
heated and mixed into AB. With each type of BC, three contents BC at 5%, 10% and
15% were also added in to AB. Two types of test are carried out in order to evaluate
performance of AB. The first test is ductility test, which gives a measure of adhesive
property of AB and captures its ability to stretch. Based on relationship between applied
loads and displacement, two parameters, namely FD and DR were pointed out.
The FD parameter indicates fatigue fracture resistance of AB and the DR parameter presents
deformation resistance of AB. The second test is three point bending beam test in order to
evaluate cracking resistance of AB at low temperature.
The results show that among three types of BC, a mixture between AB and 10% BC of type B
show a high deformation resistance. On the other hand, this BC content of type B does not have any effect
on cracking resistance of AB
