Study on the mix design of asphalt stabilized base using a cutting waste of highway

Osamu TAKAHASHI

The highway, use of recycled asphalt has not been recognized. However, in the restoration work of the Chuetsu earthquake, which was used from the fact that the industrial waste disposal facility is saturated, using the surface of the cutting waste discharged by the restoration work to the binder course and the base course.
2014, East Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd., was follow-up survey of the restoration work. As a result, no particular problem, from the fact that the expected increase in maintenance and repair work in the future, it is necessary to consider the use of asphalt waste.
In this study, we confirmed the basic physical properties of the case to build the base course using the asphalt waste to an asphalt stabilized base, was examined considerations of mix design with to evaluate its validity.
First, as a consideration of the recycled aggregate of cutting waste and general road in the prefecture highway, it was to assess the quality of each of asphalt waste. As a result, the cutting waste of the highway was good quality as compared to the general of recycled concrete as aggregate.
Next, the effect on the difference recycled asphalt quality; to evaluate the validity of mix proportion of the restoration work was carried mix design by changing the mixture ratio around 50%. As a result, the design asphalt content to use a high-density asphalt waste is reduced, and when the blending ratio of asphalt waste is more than 50%, the balance of the grain size is lost for new aggregate is reduced, the criteria of the aggregate particle size it has been found that to meet difficult.
Finally, carrying out the static bending test was evaluated for cracking resistance. As a result, when using the cutting waste of the highway, up to 50% or less by the influence of the modifier contained in the waste material, it was possible to suppress a decrease in crack resistance. However, when it exceeds 50%, the effects are insufficient for failure or new asphalt binder balance of grain size, crack resistance resulted to decrease.
