Study on the Quantitative Evaluation Method of Corrosion State of Weathering Steel Surface by Image Processing
Eiji IWASAKI
In the recent years, constructing weathering steel bridges were tended to increase to reduce maintenance costs. Weathering steels can be used and unpainted due to the factors of corrosion reduced by forming protective rusts. Since the formation of protective rust can be easily affected by environmental factors, an accurate evaluation method for monitoring and diagnosing rusting state of existing bridges is needed.
Usually, the evaluation method of rust appearance and the scotch tape tests are the most applied for monitoring and diagnosing the rusting state of existing weathering steel bridges due to its convenience and simplicity. However, the variety of the results between those different tests and evaluators is a problem that must be considered. In the past studies, we understood that there was correlation between the results of the scotch tape tests and the appearance evaluation. However, there is a limit in the appearance evaluation method which becomes more correct if it is evaluated quantitatively.
In this study, the researcher focusses on the relevance between the corresive amount and the result of scotch tape test for corrosion evaluation of a weather resistance steel bridge. Therefore, measuring rust thickness and a scotch tape test are performed on the Naebiki Bridge prior to processing an image data extracted from the experiment results in the laboratory. In addition, a set of emblem-type revelation specimens was also attached to the bridge for further image processing.
As a result, a correlation is stated between the dimension and the corrosive amount of rust particles obtained from the image processing in scotch tape test results. An estimated expression is suggested for being able to apply to other bridges and potentially estimating the rough amount of corrosion.
