Title: Verification on the reduction of ground vibration using vibration cut-off walls in model test

Professor: Hirofumi TOYOTA

In order to reduce the ground vibration caused by train traveling, the vibration cut-off is efficient based on the results of theoretical speculation and FEM analysis. However, previous studies have not verified the actual vibration propagation mechanism and have not identified highly effective material of the vibration cut-off wall.

Then, we collected the basic experimental results for a design of effective vibration cut-off wall in this study. For that purpose, the model tests considering the vibration transmission mechanism of Shinkansen were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of vibration reduction by the vibration cut-off wall.

First, suitable similarity rule was verified from the existing three type of similarity rules. Based on the experimental result, we confirmed the similarity rule specialised in dynamic problems of ground was optimal for this kind of model test.

Next, from the experiment about the effect of vibration cut-off wall, brass wall had greater effect on vibration reduction than that urethane wall had. The reason of small effect of the urethane wall was that the impedance ratio between the urethane and model ground was close to 1. Concerning the thickness of the wall, the vibration reduction effect increased with the increase of the thickness.
