Study on the performance improvement of the Flexible Approach Slab made of asphalt concrete reinforced with grid panel.

The bridge, which is not provided with the approach slab, the vehicle traffic is difficult due to large step caused by a large earthquake. Vehicle impassable during restoration work to complete. So step such great influence on the action to evacuate the victims. Placing the approach slab of reinforced concrete in the maintenance and repair work is difficult. Therefore, the developments of the step suppression method that can be constructed in a short time and low cost are required. In this study, we examined the Flexible Approach Slab by the asphalt that was reinforced with grid panel as a step suppression method that can be applied by maintenance and repair work.
There are about 300 construction results of this method, but the experience of large land subsidence is not enough, basic data about the performance and applicability is not sufficient. In this study, by carrying out the laboratory tests, we examined the differences in the deformation properties of the Flexible Approach Slab that cause the type of asphalt mixture. We have also carried out full-scale outdoor evaluation test to reproduce the steps of the bridge abutment back approach section.
Results of the study, the Flexible Approach Slab is practical as a step suppression method. Subsidence of about 50cm occurs that slabs can provide a paved surface which does not inhibit the vehicle traffic by deforming sloped. That slabs has sufficient durability in the short term. It is possible to improve the step inhibitory effect by reviewing the asphalt mixture for use in that slabs. By using a binder that can bind the aggregate strongly by a high adhesive strength, it can be obtained higher effect.
