Development of the Technology for Improvement of Thermal Environment in Summer by Watering using Snow Sprinkler and Its Evaluation

Toshiya KOMATSU, Syuji HIMENO

In recent years, an urban heat island causes some problems to lead to natural disaster, and damages human health. Watering is paid attention as the way to solute for these problems, and large-scale watering is carried out in the city such as Tokyo in recently. Snow Sprinkler is the infrastructure of a snow melting system having several type of watering, and it has been set up in the road of Nagaoka City, and its length is 850km.
This research focused on using an existing infrastructure effectively; first trial was social experiment on a large sdcale of watering with the Snow Sprinkler, second trial was an evaluation on an effect and environmental impact of watering from some viewpoints.
The social experiment was entitled mission ¡ÈCool¡É using Snow Sprinkler. The experiment operated with eight Snow Sprinklers in the urban area of Nagaoka City, and conducted watering the road of about 2.6ha around Nagaoka Station on August 2nd ?August 6th in 2011.
As a result, the temperature of the watering point decreased about 2¡î compared with non-watering point, and the humidity rose by about 10%. The average wind velocity was about 0.7m/s, and the intensity of solar radiation was about 0.6kW/Öon average. The improvement of the comfortable thermal environment was confirmed in the index called WBGT(). In addition, the amount of water and energy of this watering was 1/10 less than one in winter.
