Study on the Evaluation of redundancy of steel truss bridge

Prof.Eiji IWASAKI

In 2007 deteriorated truss bridges have caused catastrophic problems in the US and Japan.
The structural redundancy has become important in maintenance management.Redundancy means a structural condition where there are more elements of support than are necessary for stability, that is,the capability of a bridge to continue to carry loads after the failure of a member or a part of the bridge. And the redundancy analysis has been receiving much attention.
However there is no standard redundancy analysis method of steel bridge. In order to evaluate homogeneously a large amount of the bridges in Japan, there is a need is a generalization of the analysis method.
So redundancy analysis have different conditions and method by the engineer.
Therefore the purpose of this paper is to clarify redundancy analysis of steel bridge in different conditions.
In this paper, evaluation for redundancy is considered under a main member of truss structure is broken for two bridges which are the through truss and the deck truss.
It is selected on the basis of FEM analysis and employed the linear structural analysis.
In order to take account of live load, different bridge model which is considered the slab or not considered it and two bridges types.Specifically whether it is appropriate live load of 50% be used in redundancy analysis.
>From the result, it is found that there is the large influence to redundancy analysis when analyzed under different conditions. And it seems to be using live load of 50% that can not be used in standard redundancy analysis for all the steel bridge.
