The comparison of the corrosive atmosphere between the staging for exposure test in the field and real bridge for applicability judgment of weathering steel

Prof. Eiji Iwasaki

Weathering steel has the advantage of the life cycle cost and the good corrosion resistance in unpainted condition. Because of this, it has been used widely in many structures. According to a design and working instruction for unpainted weathering steel, there are not caused the heavy rust layer in the area where air-borne salt is 0.05mdd or less. And it indicates a same meaning of 0.3mm of the corrosion loss in 50 years. However, there are occurring the heavy rust layer to a number of bridges because of exposing air-borne salt and the humid area.
The purpose of this study is to predict the corrosive situation of each part of the inside girder before constructing bridges. For that reason, place the staging near the real bridge, and carried out the corrosive examinations which are air-borne salt, the thick rust, the corrosion loss, the temperature, the humidity, and the wind velocity to both of them. Furthermore, it compared with other weathering bridge and its staging in order to consider the more applicability for the staging.
In consequence, it was found that it is possible to predict the corrosive situation of each part of the inside girder before constructing bridges using the staging. Moreover, the corrosion loss of the staging was a safer estimation than the inside girder of real bridge. For more applicability staging, if it considers the effect of humidity in the staging, it is considered that it is possible to plan the bridge which is efficient, economical and accuracy by using a relation between the air-borne salt and the corrosion loss.
