Performance of a Modified Asphalt Mixture Using the Special Additive for Binder Course of Buried Joints

Osamu TAKAHASHI

ĦĦThe grid-panel-type buried joint, a kind of stress dispersion buried joints, is widely applied to urban areal viaducts in order to restrain traffic noise and vibration from gaps of the bridge decks. A mastic asphalt mixture is used to a binder course of the buried joint because of its high workability and flexibility. However, resistance of plastic flow for the mastic asphalt mixture is too low.
This research investigates development of the high-polymer-modified asphalt mixture as a better binder material of the buried joint. Firstly appropriate blending quantity of the special additives and the total asphalt content were determined on the basis of resistance of plastic flow and workability. Secondly applicability and superiority of the mixture were evaluated by results of the static and cyclic bending tests, and the direct tensile test. Filling ability for the grid panel was also assessed by comparing the property of a conventional mastic asphalt mixture.
As the results, it is confirmed that the high-polymer-modified asphalt mixture has enough properties and is applicable to a binder course of the grid-panel-type burial joint.
