Study of the effect of rejuvenator on low penetration reclaimed pavement material

Guided by Prof. Osamu Takahashi

In Japan, the performance of reclaimed pavement material is evaluated by hardness of asphalt using penetration test. For recycling, it had to be over 20 penetration value. In recent years, the demand to modified asphalt is increasing. Modified asphalt is originally penetration is low, therefore, the penetration value of reclaimed pavement material tend to fall.
In previous studies, we evaluated the properties of the binder by Force-Ductility-Test. As a result, it was found that the performance can be evaluated without regard to the type of binder by the energy values obtained from Force-Ductility-Test. And, in order to have a performance equivalent to mixture using the straight asphalt, it was found that the energy values require more than 800.
In the other hand, previous studies was focusing on the modification effect of remaining in the old asphalt, consideration about it was not carried out, however. In addition, it has not been investigated yet with splitting test value as new standard testing.
In this study, we focused in effect of rejuvenator, and evaluated the performance of asphalt and recycled mixture with recovered by using rejuvenator.
Although we were anxious about the rutting resistance of recycled mixture falling in connection with an asphalt binder becoming soft by using rejuvenator, as a result, by using old asphalt that it have more than 800 FDT value, it was cleared that the rutting resistance and the fatigue resistance value has reached the acceptable value as new straight asphalt mixture
