An analysis of commuter¡Çs travel behavior of Ulaanbaatar city

KazushiSANO

Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia is becoming heavily concentrated recently and on the other hand, its urban area expands east to west along the main street of ¡ÈPeace Avenue¡É. Therefore in this research, I tried to grasp the travel behavior of commuters in Ulaanbaatar city, and check about the modal-shift when bus-lane is introduced on the only main street of ¡ÈPeace Avenue¡É. To do that, I distributed the questionnaire among the commuters in Ulaanbaatar city firstly, and collected rate of 81% (324/400). As a result, it showed that commuters are using public transportation even they hold license, and most of them using ¡ÈPeace Avenue¡É by any modal, plus there is lot of overlapped bus routes on that street. Afterwards, I built disaggregate model based on the data which I collected. As a result, parameters showed that commuters are choosing modal depends on short-time more than low-cost. Also the time value is high as 80[yen/hour], but it values 7 times low when I compared with that of Japan. At the end, I used those parameters to check the selection probability of modes when bus-lane was set on the main street at two conditions. First, bus time on bus-lane is 5[min] shorter than common bus on the main street link, and with flat rate of 400[Tugrug,T] (1T=18Yen,rate of January,2012) which is the same as current bus. By applying disaggregate model with added mode of bus-lane into the car and bus and minibus, 16.7% commuters who were using car will shift their modal to bus on bus-lane. Since the bus is environmentally friendlier, I concluded that introducing bus-lane on the main street is very effective transportation system for build sustainable urban development of Ulaanbaatar city.
