Study on the effects of wind conditions in a rip current observations using a GPS float

Hiroki IRIE

In this study, the observation technique of the tidal current in which the wind direction and the velocity of the wind, were considered because a small float equipped with a small GPS logger was used was examined. It aims to know the trend of the tidal current that considers the influences of the wind direction and the velocity of the wind, etc. In this paper, the approximate expression at the speed of the wreckage used in the Japan Coast Guard is compared with the speed measured with a small GPS float. How a small GPS float received the wind effect was calculated by using the approximate expression. It has been understood that a small GPS float hardly receives the wind effect when the velocity of the wind is 10m or less. It experimented at sea by the use of the wreckage that received the wind effect easily. The plastic bag contains some PET bottles and the block of the styrene foam was used for this experiment. A small GPS float was installed in these two wreckages. The velocity differential measured with GPS and the velocity differential requested by the approximate expression were compared. The velocity differential measured with GPS and the velocity differential requested by the approximate expression resulted the opposite. Experimental conditions are changed and it will experiment in the future. In addition, the approximate value of the drift characteristic of the wreckage is obtained in detail
