Study on bidirectional reflection characteristics at the material surface

Atsushi RIKIMARU Hiroki IRIE

While driving a vehicle at night, when we look at the road from the driver's seat, dry road surface has the effect of illumination by light to drivers. However, wet road surface becomes specular reflection and drivers cannot look road surface bright. There are possible this behavior becomes a factor of traffic accidents. Therefore, to grasp the situation of the road surface is one of the most important issues at the road management and safety driving support, and has been demanded development of detection methods more reliable and safe surface condition.
As its correspondence, basic study on the detection of the surface state of the road has been carried out. This study on changed the state of the road surface, carried out the measurement by using bidirectional reflection characteristics and polarization characteristics of light, and the road surface condition has been pursued to detect optically. However, previous studies has not been thought about target the road surface particle size. the road surface of population that currently exist, there are various types, and they are formed by different surface properties. They are formed by different surface properties. Therefore, it thinks that these changes to affect to reflection characteristics.
In this study, prepares several materials focused on the road surface material, and we make the surface condition such as drying, wetting, freezing, and carried to measure reflection characteristics for each material. From the results, we examined the characteristics of the changes of reflection characteristics due to differences in surface particle size.
Result of comparing the material of different particle size at each surface state, at the angle that specular reflection occurs, and the characteristic of reflection characteristics was found to appear. Factors occur to feature is also a place due to the difference in the size of the particle size of the sample surface. This result is able to think also to occur by differences in particle size of the material surface, but as an indirect factor, we thought that the condition to absorptive of the water of the material and how to freeze of the material surface have a difference affect reflection characteristics.
