An Estimation of the Rutting Resistance for Asphalt Mixtures Using the Quasi Tensile Test for Asphalt Binders
Teruhiko MARUYAMA, Graduate Adviser
A quasi tensile test for modified asphalt was developed to estimate the mechanical properties of asphalt binder. The relations between the tensile stress and the strain of asphalt binders can be obtained from this test by calculating varying cross section of the specimens under tensile assuming the volume of specimen is constant.
The influence of the mechanical properties of asphalt binder on that of the asphalt mixtures was investigated. It is concluded that the peak energy obtained from stress strain curve of the tensile test for asphalt binders has a strong correlation with the maximum rut depth of asphalt mixtures obtained from the Asphalt Paving Analyzer.
