Flow characteristic analysis of asphalt mixture aggregate by image processing

Teruhiko MARUYAMA

Asphalt is prone to rutting and other damage. Rutting not only impede the safe transportation, they took a huge cost to repair and maintenance. Therefore, measures have been studied for rutting. For example, modified asphalt and new mix design have been developed.
Wheel Tracking (WT) test and Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA) test are raised as a typical test to reproduce rutting in the laboratory level. These tests consider the flow characteristics and predict the operations of the asphalt pavement. WT test is the standard test that to examine the flow characteristics based on evaluation indexes such as the Dynamic Stability (DS) and the Rate of Deformation (RD) in Japan. On the other hand, APA test is conducted as a test to measure the permanent deformation caused by rutting in American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).APA test specimen is easy to create because the total weight of the specimen used in APA test is 5kg and it has half the weight of WT specimen. However, APA test is difficult to introduce because there are no evaluation indexes due to little experience in Japan.
From the above, this study aims to set the evaluation indexes that correspond to DS of WT test for APA test. First, suggest how to find the value of DS in APA test. Then, grasp the flow characteristics of aggregates inside the specimen in both tests by the image processing. Finally, take the correlation between both tests before and after consider, examine differences in accuracy of presumption by regression analysis. The following provides the findings obtained from the examination of this study.
It was confirmed that taking the correlation between both tests after considering the flow characteristics of aggregates improves the accuracy of presumption.
