Title : Difference in theoretical maximum density of asphalt mixture by calculation method and measurement method, and its influence to mix design
Advisor : Osamu TAKAHASHI
Air voids in a compacted asphalt mixture is an important parameter for design and management of the asphalt mixture. A value of air voids is derived from the theoretical maximum specific gravity (Gmm) of the asphalt mixture. The calculation method is used to define Gmm in Japan, but the measurement method is applied in various foreign countries. Permeable voids not filled with asphalt are not taken into account and Gmm is overestimated in the calculation method. It is recognized that the measurement method is more realistic and rational than the calculation method. This study quantitatively discussed a difference between the Gmm by the measurement method and the Gmm by the calculation method and its influence to mix design.
