Statistical Study and Automatic Detection on Liquid/Solid Discrimination of Hydrometeor in Winter at Hokuriku Region, Japan

Toshiro KUMAKURA

It is important to know that the kinds of hydrometeor in every time at every location are liquid or solid because it is one of requirements to reveal local water cycles. Spatially and temporally dense observation of discriminating between the solid and liquid hydrometeor have not been done in detail in Hokuriku region, Japan, though snowfall can be observed at above 0 degree C of temperature. We hope to obtain the distribution of kind of the hydrometeor, but the best solution to reveal them is not known. Then, we attempt to produce a maintenance-free liquid/solid discriminator to be able to set many locations, and also to study arrangement of sensors. The statistical approach is also performed to complement the observations horizontally. We have time-serial datasets every 5 minutes of the discrimination in two different locations, and we reveal the spatial and temporal dependency on threshold value of temperature which is usually used to discriminate. More analysis is also performed on the relation with heat and water content of atmosphere and heat flux between the ice content and atmosphere. Unfortunately, we do not find apparent relation with them to obtain the liquid/solid precipitation amount.
