Fundamental Study on Repairing Method for Corroded Web of Steel Girders Using FRP Sheets

Supervisor Masatsugu NAGAI

In general, a steel structure is corroded by environmental effect, and then its performance deteriorates. As a countermeasure for the deteriorated steel structures, a rational repairing/reinforcing method is needed under restricted condition in usage. It is paid attention to use Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) sheets as a repair material for steel structures. However, when CFRP sheets are used for the repairing of corroded webs of steel bridges, peeling at the edge of CFRP sheets becomes a problem.
Therefore, this study aims to select FRP sheets which improve the load carrying capacity of a plate and has enough deformation capacity. Uni-axial compressive buckling test for steel plates bonded various FRP sheets was carried out. In addition, effect of urethane resin putty on deformation capacity was examined.
Results obtained from this study can be summarized as the followings.
1) Strand Sheet consisting of high elasticity carbon fibers has the maximum load carrying capacity in the test. FRP sheet using high elasticity carbon fibers is the second.
2) FRP sheets consisting of high strengthen polyethylene has the maximum deformation capacity in the test. FRP sheet using glass fibers is the second.
3) Although urethane resin putty does not improve deformation capacity, it prevents peeling of FRP sheets.
