Analysis of Flow Mechanism of the Cambodian Kampong Saom Bay

Cambodia is developing rapidly now. Large-scale development is planned also in the coastal region too. The Kampong Saom bay in Cambodia that analyzed it is in the east central part of a gulf of Thailand. There is port city Sihanoukville in the entrance of the bay. The resort plan and the port planning rise in Sihanoukville. Moreover, the port planning is advanced as for Oknha Mong Port in the east central part in the Kampong Saom bay. It can be said that the Kampong Saom bay is a part where the change in the environment by such development appears remarkably. In addition, because the Kampong Saom bay faces a gulf of Thailand, the deterioration of the environment in the bay is expected to influence a gulf of Thailand. Recently, environmental assessment that forecasts and evaluates the environmental impact by the business has been actively done to evade such a situation. However, environmental assessment was not done in the Kampong Saom bay. Moreover, the flow mechanism of the Kampong Saom bay has not been clarified though it is necessary to understand the flow mechanism in the area when environmental assessment is done in the coastal region. Therefore, the present study aimed to understand the flow mechanism of a Kampong Saom bay. The following conclusions were obtained as a result of analyzing the tidal flow and the wind drift by two dimension numerical model that used the prediction value of the tidal constant by ocean tide model NAO.99b as an input condition.

The tidal flow of the Kampong Saom bay was able to be reproduced by using the tidal constant obtained by NAO.99b. About the tidal flow, flow velocity becomes big at the entrance of the bay, and flow velocity becomes small in the interior of the bay. The thing whose difference at flow velocity is a very large sea area was confirmed. The water-level difference of the flood tide became about 1m, and confirmed the tidal flow was a predominant sea area. The influence of the wind drift was smaller than the tidal flow in the Kampong Saom bay. The diffusion calculation was done in two points (Sihanoukville and Oknha Mong Port). In Sihanoukville, the majority of the density has diffused from the south and the west side of the Kampong Saom bay. And in Oknha Mong Port, the density had stayed in the interior of the bay for a long time. The tidal exchange of the surrounding of Sihanoukville is high, and the tidal exchange of the surrounding of Oknha Mong Port is low.
