Study on the effect of repair and reinforcement method for orthotropic steel bridge decks given the fatigue damage
Yasuyuki MIYAKI

A number of fatigue cracks have been detected in orthotropic steel decks of highway bridges.¡¡The most effective retrofitting method is considered to be improvement of stiffness of the deck plate because the previous measurements and analysis have shown that major cause of fatigue damage is the lack of stiffness in bending behavior of the deck plate.
In this paper, ¡ÈReplacing U-rib method¡É was adopted for repair and reinforcement method for the fatigue cracks in the longitudinal weld between deck plate and trough web. ¡ÈReplacing U-rib method¡É was as follows.
(1) Cutting off the U-rib given the crack
(2) Splicing with bolted new U-rib, filler and deck plate
The numerical analysis of FEM has suggested the necessity of extending the filler more than the ordinary length. Then, ¡ÈReplacing U-rib method¡É has shown a good enough repair and reinforcement effect. Furthermore, if the SFRC(steel-fiber reinforced concrete) is taken together, the effect moved ahead by leaps and bounds.
