The Verification of the Ice Destruct Function in Physical Anti-Frozen Pavement

Takeshi NAKAMURA

The winter road surface management have been an important concern in snowy cold regions. The development of the freezing-prevention pavement has been carried out as one of winter road surface management methods.
This study investigated a physical anti-frozen pavement which contains elastic materials inside the surface layer and can break surface ice by loading of vehicles. However, the mechanism of breaking surface ice hasn't been cleared, and an evaluation method of breaking effect hasn't also been established.
This study evaluated the efficiency of the ice break using Wheel Tracking Test(WTT) apparatus and surface-iced specimens. The effect of breaking the ice was estimated by measuring friction of the ice surface using a slid resistance tester (BPN method).
The results showed that BPN values on the loaded area were different from those on the unloaded area. It means that the method is applicable to evaluate the effect of breaking the ice and to further investigate the mechanism of the physical anti-frozen pavement.
