Development of Database and Maintenance System for the Grid Panel Type Buried Joint
Osamu TAKAHASHI
On joints of bridges, the grid panel type buried joint is used as a method of controling noise and vibration induced by vehicle running and temperature expansion. The design service period of asphalt pavements in roads is generally designed for ten years, based on the understanding, the service period of the buried joint have been regarded as ten years. However, rehabilitation works aren”Ēt seldom required before the ten-years life, because the joint have peculiar external deformation actions.
It is necessary to understand actual situation of the buried joint in order to make a longer life and reasonable management of the joint.
This paper investigated the bellow three topics.
(1) To clarify actual situation and features of the buried joint by constructing a database.
(2) To evaluate relationship between damage level and repairment effect on the buried joint by a cyclic bending test.
(3)Based on the results obtained from above two topics the fundamental materials for architecting a maintenance system of the Buried joint were made.
The analysis of the database showed that a typical failure form of the buried joint is reflective cracking and maintenance works is important for the buried joint to last over ten years with good performance. The results of the cyclic bending test illustrates that sealing the light-stage cracking is an effective maintenance action and the timing exerts a great influence on the effect. By combine the findings from the database with the results of the cyclic bending test, the study has cleared maintenance work matters, such as failure form, required location, and action timing. Those findings can be used to architect a maintenance system of the buried joint. To architect a rational maintenance system, time-series performance data and more various results of the cyclic bending test are indispensable.
