Study on Evaluation Method of Plastic Deformation Resistance of Asphalt Concretes Using Unconfined Compression Test

Wheel Tracking Test¡ÊWTT¡Ëis generally used in Japan as the standard method for evaluating plastic deformation resistance of the asphalt concretes. In this method, however, it is necessary to prepare the specimens which are different from ones for the mix design procedure and the expensive testing apparatus. This makes the WTT become more complex and take so much costs. Therefore, this study has paid attention to Unconfined Compression Test¡ÊUCT¡Ëas a simpler evaluation test.
This study aimed to materialize execution procedure of UCT in asphalt concretes, and examine application of the UCT as the evaluation method of plastic deformation resistance.
Firstly, the evaluation of plastic deformation resistance of asphalt concretes using the UCT was executed. Secondly, a necessary size of the UCT specimen was examined among four kinds of specimens. Finally, the results of the UCT were compared with those WTT.
As a result, the UCT is not suitable to evaluate the plastic deformation resistance of asphalt concretes when asphalt content isn¡Çt optimum situation. But, in the case of the optimum asphalt content, the results of the UCT and WTT showed good correlation
