A Study on Travel Behavior and Hazard Perception of Aged People

Supervisor: Shoji MATSUMOTO, Kazushi SANO

Recently traffic accidents of aged people tend to increase. Their perception toward traffic hazard is not good enough while their physical strength has weakened. This study aims to conduct questionnaire surveys for pedestrians and drivers of aged and non-aged people in the build-up area of Nagaoka, Niigata, and to identify the structure of hazard perception for aged people by using the Structural Equation Model. Respondents were requested to point out intersections where they feel dangerous to cross walking in a survey district, and evaluate the level of traffic hazard by 5-points scale when they drive a car for specified four intersections. Aged pedestrians reveal that neighborhood streets and traffic are dangerous since their walking areas are small. Aged drivers identify that spatial interaction of man and car and nighttime driving are dangerous.
