Analysis of flood flow propagation in middle reaches of Shinano River

Tokuzo HOSOYAMADA

¡¡A steady improvement of the flood control safety and construction of high-quality stream management are requested for river management. On the other hand, the dam with the important role as a flood control and a water utilization is becoming a difficult situation to construct from many reasons such as changes in a social condition and a condition of geological features in some water systems. The investigation and the research of the flood flow from a new aspect are more important. Then, ¡Èstorage effects of river channel¡É attract attention of river engineers in recent years. There are various features in the river, such as the reservoir, the meander of the river, the flood plain and an extreme change in the width of a river. They made the decrease of flow discharge in the downstream river channel. Shinanogawa river management office of Ministry of infrastructure, land and transportation(MLIT), measured flow discharge and water level in each area in middle reach of Shinano river. The observation results shows decrease of flow discharge, which means the storage effects of river channel¡É. In the present study, two-dimensional numerical simulation model with general curvilinear coordinates was applied to the middle reaches of the Shinano river. As a result, the peak flow discharge decrease is confirmed, and the effect that the river saves water in the Nagaoka district in Shinnano riverwas able to be shown qualitatively. The reason of the decrease of flow discharge is still unknown. The decrease is supposed to be caused by basins located between Ojiya and Nagaoka
