Study on dike break mechanism using model tests

Recently, we have heavy rain and dike break occurs around the land. So, antidisaster plan for dike break is needed.
The cause of dike break is divide into seepage and overflow .
The former is slope failuer ,boiling by seepage .
The later is by erosion.
Experiments about former break case are implemented many times , and analysis method consernd characters of seepage and force is establised by seepage analysis and rigid-plastic finite elemet method. On the other hand, study on the later faiure case is less than former and erosion and character of seepage and force is not consernd.
In this study , we implement 3cases model tests to obtain fundamental datas to establish analysis method about dike break by overflow.
On the experiment, we measured shapes of dike by erosion , chracter of force , seepage and experiment of mechanism of dike break.Experiment cases are below.
Case1 Broken by only seepare .Case2 broken by only overflow . Case3 Overflow after seepage.
We obtain below result by the experiment.
1.In case1 and case3 , slope failure occured when the water runs on the dike.
2.In case2, bank is erosioned by water and broken, slope failuer didn't occured.
3.In case1 and case3 , hydrulic gradient between center of bank and the land side slope is larger than
one between center of bank and the river side slope¡¥
4Slope failure occured when hydraulic gradient is rising or the time hydraulic gradient rised.
