Study on the Damage State of Asphalt Pavements in Tokyo International Airport

Osamu Takahashi

A asphalt pavements in Tokyo International Airport have had damage day by day, and maintenance problems have developed. Design period of asphalt pavements is established ten years. However early rehabilitation works are required. Under this situation, another runway will be newly opened in this year. After the new runway starts to use, it is prospected that the traffic volume for the airfield pavements increases rapidly, and the times of rehabilitation also increases further.
This study investigated the damage state and the damage characterization of airfield asphalt pavements in Tokyo International Airport, one of representative Japanese airports, based on surface characteristics data of the pavements. From the results the study clarified the pavement area having insufficient damage resistance and the main damage form, and also discussed haw to improve the durability of the HMA mixture.
This study indicates the following findings.
a) The asphalt pavements in Tokyo International Airport have damage, and the taxiway next to a terminal area has serious rutting in particular.
b) To improve rutting resistance, use of the modified asphalt and the adjustment of aggregate gradation are effective
