Title: Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from an Aqueous Solution by the Photocatalytic Effect and Ion-Exchange Adsorption in Composite Particles Consisting of ¦Á-FeOOH and Titanium Dioxide

Supervisor: Kazunori Sato

Abstract:
It is very interesting to use fine ¦Á-FeOOH particles as an auxiliary catalyst for titanium oxide(TiO2) particles and an adsorbent of heavy metal ions in order to remove heavy metal ions existing at low concentrations from an aqueous solution. The 15 mol% ¦Á-FeOOH-TiO2 particles showed the highest ability for the Pb(II) ions removal under the irradiation. It was found that Pb(II) ions are deposited as PbCO3 by the photoelectro-deposition. However, the photocatalytic activity of ¦Á-FeOOH-TiO2 particles did not occur under the visible light (¦Ë¡ä400 nm) irradiation, which indicates the electron trapping for the surface Fe(II) ions; this effect enhances the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. The ¦Á-FeOOH-TiO2 particles preferentially removed Cu(II) ions from a solution including Cu(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) ions under the light irradiation.
