Chemical Reaction between Platinum and Bi2O3-BaO- B2O3 Melt

MATUSITA Kazumasa

It is well known that platinum is corroded in melt containing PbO or Bi2O3 at high temperature. In the present study, two platinum plates(35×2.5×0.5mm) were inserted as electrodes in the XBi2O3-10BaO-(90-X)B2O3 melt and electrolysis was carried out with constant direct current of 6 mA at 950℃ for 6h. After electrolysis, the interfaces between Pt electrodes and the melt were analyzed by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA).
In the result, it was found that Bismuth ion (Bi3+) was reduced at Pt-cathode and Bi-Pt alloy was formed. It was also found that Pt-cathode corrosion decreased with increasing Bi2O3. On the other hand, Pt-anode hardly corroded. These mechanisms of reaction were discussed based on the electrochemistry.
