Chemical Reaction between Platinum and Bi2O3-BaO- B2O3 Melt

MATUSITA Kazumasa

It is well known that platinum is corroded in melt containing PbO or Bi2O3 at high temperature. In the present study, two platinum plates(35¡ß2.5¡ß0.5mm) were inserted as electrodes in the XBi2O3-10BaO-(90-X)B2O3 melt and electrolysis was carried out with constant direct current of 6 mA at 950¡î for 6h. After electrolysis, the interfaces between Pt electrodes and the melt were analyzed by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA).
In the result, it was found that Bismuth ion (Bi3+) was reduced at Pt-cathode and Bi-Pt alloy was formed. It was also found that Pt-cathode corrosion decreased with increasing Bi2O3. On the other hand, Pt-anode hardly corroded. These mechanisms of reaction were discussed based on the electrochemistry.
