Viscous Flow Mechanism of Borate Glasses Based on Free Volume Theory

MATUSITA Kazumasa

In recent years, optimization of the melting process of glass is required to improve quality of new glass. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the properties of glass melts.
In this study, density and viscosity of borate glasses were measured in a wide temperature range and viscous flow mechanism was analyzed based on the free volume theory.
The viscosity was decreased with an increase in the volume in a wide temperature range from the solid state to the melt state. In the viscosity-volume curve, bending was not found at the volume that corresponded to the glass transition temperature.
As a result, it was found that the viscous flow mechanism of borate glass can be expressed by the free volume theory. Close relationship was also found between volume, V0 which free volume is zero and occupied volume which is calculate from ionic radius.
