Title: Evaluation of the characteristics of retained sludge in down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor applied as post-treatment of UASB treating municipal wastewater

Teacher: Takashi Yamaguchi

Abstract:
A DHS (Down-flow Hanging Sponge) reactor was applied as post-treatment of a UASB (Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Bed) reactor treating municipal sewage, and was operated for 2 years at HRT of 3.2 h in order to investigate the factors affecting repression of excess sludge production in the DHS. The average of excess sludge from DHS was 0.30 g-SS/g-CODremoved (0.25 g-VSS/g-BODremoved) after the retained sludge in DHS stabled. The value was comparable to that of anaerobic bio-treatment reactor. The COD sludge load to the DHS was about 0.1~0.2 g-COD/g-VSSay due to a extremely high sludge concentration. The fact indicating that the potential of increasing sludge in DHS was kept low range. On the other hand, specific oxygen up-take rate of the retained sludge was 0.18 gO/gVSS”¦day on maximum at 25oC, indicating that the DHS had a high potential activity for sludge autolysis. DHS had higher organisms such as protozoa and metazoa predate the bacteria as much as the tricking filter reactor. However, the concentration of microfauna was the same level as the activated sludge, indicating that a high food chain (prey-predator) may attribute to the low sludge production in DHS.
