STUDY ON FATIGUE RESISTANCE OF AGED HMA CONCRETES USING MODIFIED AND UNMODIFIED ASPHALT BINDERS

Osamu””TAKAHASHI

This study investigated various physical properties of aged and un-aged asphalt binders, and compares them with aged and un-aged modified asphalt binders. Those binders properties are also compared with fatigue resistance of the hot mix asphalt (HMA) concretes using those binders in order to discuss a relationship between a binder property and fatigue resistance of the HMA concrete. As the result, the following findings are obtained from this study.
£±) The HMA concrete using the modified binder had one-fifth damage of the concrete using the unmodified binder.
£²”ĖThe difference between aged and un-aged properties, such as viscoelastic and consistency characteristics, in the modified binder is smaller than those in the unmodified binder. Temperature susceptibility of the properties in the modified binder is also lower than that in the unmodified binder. Based on the differences, the HMA concrete using the modified binder has the advantage of longer fatigue resistance.
£³”ĖFrom a characteristic of G*sin¦Ä, one of Superpave DSR property, fatigue resistance of HMA concretes using modified and unmodified asphalt binders can be estimated in the middle range.
