STUDY ON ASPHALT MIXTURE DESIGN OF BINDER COURSE FOR DISPERSION TYPE BURIED JOINTS

Osamu TAKAHASHI

The buried joints using grad-panel on bridge decks are used in order to restrain traffic vibration and noise. However premature rutting is formed because of insufficient dynamic stability in binder course of the buried joints. Stone Matrix Asphalt, SMA, is one of promising asphalt mixtures for the binder course.
The objective of this study is to propose a design procedure of SMA with 5mm nominal aggregate size(SMA(5))for binder course of the buried joints. Applicability of the SMA is also evaluated as the mixture of binder course for dispersion type buried joints. As the result, this study indicates that consideration of aggregates interlocking introduces sufficient rutting resistance to the SMA(5)mix design. The evaluation tests confirm that expansion-and-contraction efficiency of the SMA(5)is also sufficient as the binder course of dispersion.
