Study on Development of the Asphalt Pavement Material Using Waste Cross-linked Polyethylene

Teruhiko Maruyama

At present, recycling of cross-linked polyethylene used for wire coating materials has become an issue. Since the difficulties in forming process by remelting of cross-linked polyethylene, 80 percent of cross-linked polyethylene is recycled for fuel and the left 20 percent is reclaimed. In fact, there are no prevalent recycling methods of cross-linked polyethylene.
In this research, a new recycling method of mixing the waste cross-linked polyethylene in asphalt mixtures as a pavement material is proposed. After mixing the waste cross-linked polyethylene as aggregate in the asphalt mixture, mixture design is conducted. Based on the decided mixture formula, evaluation tests of the stability, the waterproof stability, the indirect tensile characteristics, and the flexibility at low temperature are implemented. At the same time, compared with the common dense grade asphalt mixture (13), the applicability to pavement is discussed.
According to the result, the cross-linked polyethylene mixture is of the either equaling or surpassing performance compared with the dense grade asphalt mixture (13). Consequently, the applicability of cross-linked polyethylene for pavement materials is confirmed.
