STUDY ON DESIGN METHOD OF HOT MIX ASPHALT MIXTURES USING SUPERPAVE GYRATORY COMPACTOR

Osamu TAKAHASHI

A design asphalt content is determined by assessing Marshall-rammer-compacted specimens during the Japanese design procedures of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mxture. The Superpave design procedure uses Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC) to produce compacted specimens. The SGC machine can apply kneading action to HMA samples as the same as traffic densification. Because of this, the Superpave procedure can design HMA mixtures using the more realistic specimens.
In order to introduce the SGC into the Japanese HMA design procedure, this study discusses application of voids in mineral aggregate (VMA) as a design parameter.
Relationships between asphalt content and resistance of fatigue failure, crack resistance and compaction property of the asphalt concrete were investigated in the discussion. From the results, this study establishes the limitation of the asphalt content based on VMA, and evaluates the validity of the VMA requirement.
This design method gives the advantages of simple procedure and reliability on the Japanese HMA mixture design
