Enhancement of the Anodic Oxidation of Methane by the Partial Substitution of Cobalt for Nickel in the Samaria-Doped Ceria Cermet Anode

Kazunori SATO

The performance of a cermet anode, which consists of the Ni-Co solid-solution alloy particles and samaria-doped ceria (SDC) particles, has been investigated. The anodic polarization resistance of the Ni0.5Co0.5-SDC anode was relatively low for H2 and CH4 using an SDC electrolyte disk or a scandia-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) electrolyte. The microstructural characterization of these cermet anodes revealed a proof of an enhancement effect on the electrochemical oxidation of CH4. In case of using the SDC electrolyte, the oxide ions supplied through the SDC electrolyte contribute to oxidation of methane even under the open circuit condition, which is specific to the mixed ionic electronic conduction of SDC.
