Development of mesophilic methane fermentation reactor treating garbage without addition of water

Takashi YAMAGUCHI

We investigated the performance of mesophilic methane fermentation reactor treating garbage without addition of water. Our study focused on avoiding ammonia inhibition when¡¡nitrogen-rich substrate such as garbage was digested anaerobically without dilution by water.
The mesophilic methane fermentation reactor was operated at a temperature of 37 ¡î and fed with garbage as a substrate. We used three types of reactors that stir methods were different. The stir methods used without stir, with stir and gas mixing. We installed ammonia absorption tank that was filled with sulfuric acid to removed ammonia gas in gas phase of the reactor. The ammonia absorption tank and gas phase of the reactor was made to circulate with a
pump.
This reactor was operated OLR of 4 kgCOD/m3/d and HRT 60 days. AS a result, this reactor achieve methane gas concentration of 60%, COD removal efficiency of 80% and VS removal efficiency of 80%. The reactor without stirred was the propionate accumulation.Effects of stirring on mesophilic methanefermentation without water was reduction of propionate accumulation and contribute to promotion of the ammonia removal
