Study on mix design of stone matrix asphalt for binder course of buried joints

Osamu TAKAHASHI

Stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixtures used in Japan are generally developed for an ordinary pavement structures. A suitable SMA mixture should be developed to apply SMA to binder course of grid-panel-type buried joints. The objectives of this study are to evaluate mixture design of SMA with nominal aggregate size 9.5 mm (SMA10) for binder course of buried joints, to obtain appropriate design parameters required for selecting an effective aggregate gradation, and to evaluate the properties of designed SMA mixtures, including water-tightness, flexibility, durability and workability.
This study has found that the proposed SMA10 mixtures have sufficient flexibility for seasonal movements of bride decks, less rutting susceptibility, and reasonable workability. Those benefits confirm that the SMA mixture is applicable for binder course of buried joints. This study also introduces and suggests a mixture design guideline for effective stone skeleton in SMA mixtures.
