Study on physical effects of aging degradation for modified binders and modified asphalt concretes

Osamu¡¡TAKAHASHI

This study investigated a change in physical properties due to aging progresses not only for modified binders and straight asphalt but also for the asphalt concretes using those binders. Based on the results of various evaluation tests, this study has clarified aging characteristics of the modified binder and a relationship between the aged modified binder and the aged asphalt concrete. The remarkable findings are summarized as follows.
£±¡ËChanges in visco-elastic properties due to aging progress on modified binder are lower than those on straight asphalt. As the result, the asphalt concrete using the modified binder has excellent resistance to fatigue cracking.
£²¡ËSuperpave DSR test properties, i.e. complex modulus G*, loss tangent tan¦Ä, and G*sin¦Ä, can indicate aging tendency of asphalt concrete. On the above normal temperature conditions, G*sin¦Äis especially effective for evaluating resistance to fatigue cracking.
