Bunpei Nakade, Shu Higuchi, Toshiya Matsukawa

This study analyze the transition of compactness of the city from the change in the urban function, the number of population and employee based on mesh system whose size was about 1kÖ, for 30 medium-sized local cities of about 100000 populations. As a result, we find the followings.
The Japanese medium-sized local city has not decreased accumulation of the core by causing the doughnut phenomenon of the population. However, for the period from 1980 to 2000, all cities increase all of the population, the employee, and the urban function in the suburbs at the same time as decreasing those accumulations by the core. The development around interchange newly established in suburbs and along the highway is a factor for these changes.
