Crystallization of copper phosphate low melting glass

Kazumasa MATUSITA

P2O5-CuO-ZnO glasses is a new low melting glass not containing a toxic lead oxide. In this study, crystallization behavior of copper phosphate glass system was investigated.
Glasses melted under open atmosphere were heat treated at temperatures from 540¡î¡¡to 700¡î for two hours. In the glass of 0 and 10mol% CuO the crystal, Zn(PO3)2, was precipitated and in the glass of 20-50mol% CuO the crystal, Cu(PO3)2, was precipitated. The activation energy for crystallization was determined by relation between temperature of DTA peak and heating rate. Glasses melted in reduced atmosphere were heat-treated at 900¡î, for two hours in reduced atmosphere. In P2O5-CuO glass only the surface was crystalized and in P2O5-CuO-ZnO glass crystallization was not observed.
It was concluded that crystallization was inhibited in the glasses in which most copper ions are Cu+.
