Viscous flow mechanism of mixed alkali silicate glasses based on free volume theory

Kazumasa MATUSITA

In this study, viscosity and density of mixed alkali silicate glasses were measured from 240 to 1400¡î and relation between volume and viscosity was analyzed based on free volume theory.

It was observed that the density of mixed alkali silicate glass from room temperature to high temperature increases as a molecular weight of glass composition.

It was also observed the temperature dependence of the viscosity was similar in every glass composition.

The viscosity of these glasses can be discribed by function of volume only and the application of free volume theory was found to be possible.

Constant V0 in the equation of free volume theory (log¦Ç=A+BV0/Vf) was shown to have a relation with ionic radious of glass component as is the case of soda-lime-silicate glass and phosphate glasses.

It was found found that in constant V0 and B, influence of mixed alkali effect was not observed
