Chemical reaction of glass with hydrofluoric acid

Kazumasa MATUSITA

It is not carried out systematic research on reaction of various glasses with hydrofluoric acid. In this study, silica, soda-lime-silicate (plate glass), aluminosilicate, and borosilicate glasses were immersed in hydrofluoric acid for 36 sec. - 10 days at 25¡î and dissolution rates of these glasses were measured. It was observed that the dissolution rate is the following order : soda-lime-silicate glass¢âaluminosilicate glass > borosilicate glass > silica glass in every HF concentration. It was found that dissolution rate was decreased with the increase of glass transition temperature. In other words, in silicate glasses, the glass with increasing Tg has higher resistance to HF acid
