Monitoring storm water road runoff and its evaluation of heavy metal loading using a newly designed sampler

Toshiya KOMATSUˇ¤Shuji HIMENO

The loading to the environment of the road runoff that is non-point pollution recently increases. However, it is not planned, because the realities grasp is not done. The purpose of this research is to measure the heavy metal included in the road runoff for the long term, and to clarify the discharge property in various rainfall patterns.
It is impossible to obtain the whole road runoff of one rainfall. In the research, a newly designed sampler was designed and made. The sampler collects water according to division into a constant amount. Therefore, sampling can be done till the rainfall end.
The road runoff was measured 25 times with this device. It was confirmed that the heavy metal was mostly included in the dissolved form. Therefore, the total heavy metal concentration hardly received the influence of the road deposit by an increase of no-rainfall duration. The concentration of heavy metal in the suspended form has decreased along with the rainfall continuation though it was high density at the early rainfall stage. On the other hand, the heavy metal in the dissolved form flowed out with almost constant concentration. Therefore, the total heavy-metal loading showed strong positive correlation with the amount of each rainfall.
