Effect of Fumarate addition on Thermophilic UASB reactor performance in term of Process Failure Recovery

Akiyoshi OHASHI

In this work, effect of fumarate on intermediate prpionate degradation in
thermophilic metanogenic process was investigated using UASB fed with propionate
as only organic matters.Resently, reconstruction and regulation of the central
catabolic pathway in the thermophilic Pelotomaculum thermopropionicum. Another
resercher said 'Fumarate addition is useful against propionate degradation in
thermophilic metanogenic process. So I reserch this effect using UASB reactor.

Oxidation of succinate to fumarate is an energetically difficult step in the
biochemical pathway of propionate oxidation bysyntrophic methanogenic cultures.
The effect of fumarate on propionate oxidation by two different propionate-oxidizing
culture was investigated.Fumarate could act as term of Process Failure Recovery time.

A rapid epifluorescence staining method using Live/Dead Bacterial Viability kit
was applied to estimate both viable and total counts of granules. This method could
detect process failure. But This method could not detect process recovery.
