Development””of a Novel Host Range Detection Method of Bacteriophages

Akiyoshi OHASHI

Understanding of host range of bacteriophages will be help to understand their ecological role in the natural environments. In this study, we developed a novel host range detection method of bacteriophages to help conventional methods such as a plaque formation test. This method constitutes four types of molecular methods. To development the novel method, we used bacteriophage T4 and Escherichia coli as a model. After several attempts at developing the method, we applied the method to sewage. As a result, T4 phage infected with not only E. coli cells, which has been known as a host bacterium, but also other bacterial cells. These results suggest that the method would be help to explore for host range of other bacteriophages
