Statistical Properties of the Annual Maximum Snow Depth in Niigata Prefecture

Mianjio LU

In design of roads and buildings in snowy region, the snow load is very important which is determined from statistical analysis of the annual maximum snow depth (AMSD). Various studies have been performed about the statistical properties of the AMSD to date. However, only a few statistical analysis methods (the combination of statistical distribution and parameter estimation method) have been used so far. In this study, we performed a statistical analysis using 12 methods to examine the statistical properties of the AMSD in Niigata Prefecture.

It turned out that generalization extreme value (GEV) distribution have the best fitness for all 325 sites. The AMSD with return period 30 years are calculated and compared with those estimated by 3-parameter log-normal distribution with parameters obtained by using Iwai¡Çs method. It is shown that GEV give smaller AMSD for most sites in Niigata Prefecture.
