The use of Continuous Fiber Rope for Strengthening of Existing Structures

Supervisor: Takumi SHIMOMURA

In this research, reinforced concrete beams strengthened by continuous fiber rope (CF Rope) and concrete jacket were produced to examine the structural details of this strengthening method such as arrangement of CF Rope, anchorage of CF Rope and the role of concrete jacket. Static loading tests of the beam specimens were carried out.
Through the tests, it is experimentally confirmed that, CF Rope and concrete jacket can increase shear capacity of the member and create a ductile member failure mode.
The second part of the research focuses on using CF Rope and concrete jacket for seismic retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete columns. Reversed cyclic loading tests of column specimens retrofitted by CF Rope and concrete jacket was carried out and test results were compared with those of columns retrofitted by continuous fiber sheets.
Through the tests, it can be concluded that the retrofitting method using CF Rope and concrete jacket can improve ductility of reinforced concrete columns as effective as retrofitting with continuous fiber sheets.
